| Camp Lejeune is a great place to live. If you like the outdoors it is fantastic, if you are a city person you will like it for the all the reasons you hate the city, no traffic. It is a large base, there is new really nice base housing and with the housing market not doing well it is a great place to live on base. On base schools are a plus, you have to live on base for your kids to attend school or plan on living on base. Big Commissary and PX. ; |
| My husband and I are both Hampton Roads natives and we have lived in Hampton, Carrollton, and Smithfield,(all in Virginia) throughout our lives. We currently live in the neighborhood of Wendwood in Newport News and love our house and location. We are centrally located to everything the Hampton Roads area has to offer. Wendwood is located near the intersection of Warwick Blvd. ( Rt. 60 ) and Oyster Point Rd. We are about 10 min. down the road from Ft. Eustis and about 15 min. from Langley Air Force Base. We are zoned for the best schools in the city. Shopping is convenient with Costco and The Fresh Market just down the road and a Food Lion, Dairy Queen, CVS and Walgreens all within walking distance. There is so much to do in this area! There are many parks and museums. We are just outside of the Historic Triangle without being smothered by the tourists. Busch Gardens is 15 min.s down the road and Water Country is just a bit farther. This area is surrounded by water with many beaches to choose from. The local favorite is Buckroe Beach in Hampton, or you could go to Virginia Beach which is just under an hour away. I love the beach at Cape Henry on Fort Story which I think is the best! In Newport News, there is the Virginia Living Museum, Mariners Museum, Ferguson Center for the Arts (Christopher Newport University), Peninsula Fine Arts Center, and the Yoder Theater. This area is where we plan to stay. We can't imagine living anywhere else.; |
| We don't live on post Ft.Lewis. In fact, we live about 15 miles south in Olympia. We moved here in August in 2006 and have found a wonderful neighborhood. McKenny Elementary School, Washington Middle School and Olympia High School are within a one mile radius which is great because in nice weather we can actually walk to school. We in a new development off Boulevard Rd. and we thoroughly enjoy it. I would say about 1/3 of the neighbors are military which makes for a nice mix. The Briggs YMCA is close by and they have a pool with great programs. LBA Park is around the corner across from McKenny Elementary School with playground, tennis courts, a little backwood trail and baseball fields. Commuting up to Ft.Lewis has never been a problem, well, off and on on a Friday evening...but otherwise it's great. | Merryman Place - a quaint neighborhood in the Olympia School District (one of the best in the area) - with sidewalks, and a protected culdesac for containing small children. Olympia High School, Washington Middle School, and McLane Elemantary are all within walking distance. Nearby recreation includes the Watershed Hiking Trail, numerous state parks, Tumwater Falls Park, a skateboard park, Downtown Olympia, the Olympia Farmers Market, and the Puget Sound. If you are into hiking, kayaking, biking and family centered activities - Olympia and a neighborhood like Merryman place is perfect for you. ; |
